Outstanding Women To Be Honored At Elly Awards
The Women’s Forum of New York will present the inaugural Elly Awards Luncheon benefitting The Education Fund of The Women’s Forum on Wednesday, June 15, at The Plaza Hotel in New York City. The awards, named for The Women’s Forum founder Elinor Guggenheimer, will honor outstanding women leaders.
The Elly Award Recipients (both in attendance) will be:
- Evelyn H. Lauder, Founder and Chairman of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation to be presented by Bobbi Brown
- Diana Taylor, Managing Director of Wolfensohn Fund Management, LP to be presented by Lisa Caputo.
Barbara Walters, nine-time Emmy Award winning journalist and television legend, will conduct a joint interview with the honorees preceding the presentation of the awards.

Steve-O To Race In Celebrity Charity Go Kart Event
Sixteen stars will compete to lead their teams to victory at a special celebrity charity Go Kart Tournament in Gardena, California, on May 28.
Steve-O, Kyle Massey and Chris Massey are just a sample of the celebrities congregating at the K1 Speed Indoor Racing facility in Gardena for a day of fun-filled activities and an exciting Go-Kart Tournament to create awareness and show their support for the American Diabetes Association.
The event, hosted by legendary NFL Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson and Gary Sturgis from Tyler Perry’s Diary of A Mad Black Woman, is a celebration of family fitness and fun, as celebrities and attendees alike join together to give back to charity, as well as fighting for the prevention of diseases in children at an early age.
“It is really important that we teach the children that diabetes, or any other disease for that matter, does not have to be unmanageable,” say event organizers Stacy Lyles and Askari Ali. “The most common variant of Diabetes (Type 2 variant) is preventable by implementing good eating habits and regular physical activity in kids, so they can grow up healthy and strong.”
Attending celebrities will lead one of sixteen children’s teams to victory; a cash prize will be awarded to the winning team, to be donated to the organization of their choice. Though the tournament plays a big part, the event will also feature interactive games, music performances, healthy culinary demonstrations, professional trainers, and the latest on diabetes prevention and advances. With plenty of celebrity photo opportunities, as well as local and national media coverage, this is one summer event you will not want to miss.
Various non-profit organizations and health facilities have reached out to show their support and involvement with the tournament, including the Children's Hospital Los Angeles, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, City of Hope Centers, and The Complete Athlete Foundation for Kids, among other local charities. “It is definitely a family event that will show the public an interactive and engaging way to save a child’s life and have fun at the same time,” adds Lyles.
Confirmed celebrities include: Grammy Award-winning artist Mario, UFC Champion Tito Ortiz, Recording Artist Warren G, Dorian Gregory (Charmed, Without A Trace), Sean Kanan (The Bold and The Beautiful, Karate Kid III), Ashley Argota (Schooled, True Jackson, VP), Radio Disney’s Austin Anderson and many more.

This Week In Trailers: Film Socialisme, Scalene, The Artist, Xu Xia, Magic Trip
Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they?re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I?m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers?
Film Socialisme Trailer
We all can point to examples of those in this industry who have lost their edge, their hunger, their passion to make a good film. For an actor, it's the lack of exuding the very thing that made us fall in love with them. For a director, it's the inability to make a good film.
Jean-Luc Godard doesn't seem to have that problem.
This trailer exudes the kind of confidence and starkness that you see in a movie like Breathless but it's the harnessing of the medium itself that not only is delightful it's impressive.
The presentation is so jarring and so stand-offish you wonder what it is you're actually being pitched. Is this a movie about a cruise ship or is it something else? The mixed media of both film and video, and some distorted video that drips with eeriness, that plays over the haunting sounds of a pipe organ is wonderful to just experience. There isn't a sell job here as much as there is a true exploration of an idea. The idea being, of course, that this movie isn't like anything you'll catch this year.
Sure, the fast forward speed at which images and moments fly by don't allow you to get a grip on anything you see it nonetheless tells you volumes about what's being communicated. There's some confusing imagery of a woman standing with a burro at a gas station, another woman getting her picture taken on the side of the road, some people can be seen living their lives inside a house in a way that's not only not boring, it's fascinating.
I can't say for sure what we're supposed to feel but this doesn't ever stray into art for art's sake. I would be enraged if I thought there was too much pretension injected in this trailer but there's something genuinely trying to be said here and I can almost make it out that my mind aches as I try and understand what it is they want me to buy. I'm most certainly going to do so but its obfuscation is such a tease.
Scalene Trailer
Margo Martindale is a special kind of actress.
She's a character actor, a working actor, who has been knocking down parts for decades simply because she knows what she's doing. She blends in with the environment and is one of those women you wish more actresses could be like: a chameleon, not an ego driven starlet who needs attention more than genuine acclaim. Here, though, she's front and center and what little we can see of her there is a range of emotions on display for a film that doesn't look easily classifiable but it's wickedly entrancing.
In a series this week of trailers that don't seem to have any words being spoken at all, here is the second of three trailers that use only music to convey the emotion running through the narrative. This trailer, though, has some toughness. There is raw emotion exuding through Martindale and it radiates through the small screen. It's obvious that writer/director Zack Parker saw what Margo was able to do and he seems to have tapped right into that source as we see Margo in various states of mental acuity. There's a manic version of her, a sullen version, and even one that looks genuinely pleased.
The exciting thing about this trailer is that it makes you want to know more about what's happening. The shots that are chosen are wisely picked because it prevents any opportunity for there to be any lulls. Your attention doesn't drift because the trailer won't let you drift. There seems to be sharp schisms of mental instability all around and it's exciting. For all the trailers that want to play pretty and prance around what we're all here to see it's just plain great to be sold on a movie without any context. It's an anthem to anarchy of sorts but it fits so well when you understand what it is the movie is really trying to say, what it's putting out there.
It's ballsy to put something out there, at this budgetary level, and let this be their commercial that will get people to see it. There isn't anything commercial about it but it's just too good to pass up when the level of craftsmanship that went into making something look so odd and so enticing. The scrambling of names is a nice touch as well. It conveys the crazed nature of both the protagonist and evokes a certain understanding about the movie in general.
The Artist Trailer
This one is a complete delight.
Written and directed by Michael Hazanavicius this trailer is about cinema that feels good, that seems like an old blanket that can still warm your body. I can hardly believe that the man credited for bringing the two OSS 117 films to our shore made this kind of movie simply based on the level of zaniness of OSS but, here, has made something so unique that this is truly a trailer that needs no further examination other than experiencing it.
Enjoy this one simply for the way it tells a story without ever giving you a word.
Magic Trip Trailer
This is certainly an interesting trailer for a new Alex Gibney film.
I'm endlessly fascinated by the choices the man has made and looking a few paces beyond this movie, directing a Lance Armstrong documentary (wondering if he'll include the accusations made on 60 Minutes a few nights ago) and directing a doc on Wikileaks, the man is one of the premiere examiners of current sociological issues and the impact they have on our collective consciousness.
The trailer here is a unique blend of personal footage and cheeky glibness. What's more is that this serves as a document of sorts that looks at a time in the 60's that was the forerunner of the hippie generation. It's documentaries like this that help to put history in its proper context and there most certainly looks like there's more than enough context happening here. There is the footage that is allowed to speak for itself, the moments we get with author Ken Kesey, it's like watching home movies of people who were much cooler than you.
While the trailer is a little too polished, the film, which is also co-directed by Allison Ellwood (she also directed one of the best reality shows of all time, American High) looks like one of those stories about American society that has long since passed on as people passed through the civil rights movement and everything else that has made the idyllic days of The Merry Band of Pranksters a quaint remnant of a time that will never be.
While I can't say how riveting this documentary will be it is nonetheless Gibney's name which makes me believe this will be more than worth my attention. Outside of him and Ellwood, I'm not sure I'd give this a second thought.
Wu Xia Trailer
Yes!
What a good year it's been so far for Donnie Yen. Actually, it's been a good year for me seeing films with Donnie in them. Yeah, Legend of the Fist wasn't that hot but Donnie has been hitting the market fairly hard with his presence and it's been delightful.
This trailer may only be a minute long but it does establish a little bit of story and a whole lot of what to expect in terms of its wire-fu. There's a visual gimmick of seeing what happens when Donnie lays the smack down on guys who no doubt to deserve it but just seeing the man dish out the physical hurt on guys makes me dig this man even more and fear the day when Hollywood wants to put him alongside Chris Tucker in some dreadful Hollywood vehicle.
The action here is swift and mighty. Director Peter Chan's last, The Warlords, didn't do much for me but this, this looks like something I could really enjoy. I'm hoping for both his and Yen's sake that there's a movie here I can finally settle in and enjoy. [Twitch [1]]

Green Lantern 3D Trailer [6] - I mean this in the best way possible: this trailer feels like something I would see before embarking on a spin through Space Mountain.
Conan O'Brien Can't Stop Trailer [7] - I think the best parts of this trailer are when we see Conan being brutally honest with us and himself. Why you would hide that behind the pandering wackiness is a little stupefying.
Homeland Trailer [8] - This looks about as interesting as a cooling bowl of oatmeal: ultimately satisfying but rather bland all by itself.
The Muppets Teaser Trailer [9] - I don't get why they felt the need to keep the farce up for as long as they did. Rather, the real audience for this, kids under ten, just want the felt puppets, not some crafty joke.
Take Shelter Trailer [10] - If this isn't your favorite trailer this week there is something wrong with your chemical makeup. Rock solid all the way around.
Salvation Boulevard Trailer [11] - Just doesn't do anything for me. The message is muddled about what it is they're selling and what's here just falls flat.
A Little Help Trailer [12] - A little too clever for its own good. I'm not inspired to see this as much as I am kind of annoyed by its tone.
The Smurfs Trailer #2 [13] - Just wither up and die already. Someday I predict this will be sold in a combo two pack in a discount bin with Hop right next to the Antonio Sabato Jr. collection.
Shark Night 3D Trailer [14] - This looks horrendous. The people who made this trailer do know that I can't see in 3D, right? It just seems like a waste of resources.
The Descendants Trailer [15] - I really like this trailer. A lot. I am hoping for a sweeping, dramatic explosion but I would be satisfied if it was just plain good.
Happy Feet Two Trailer [16] - I had such a virulently bad reaction to the first film that I can't see anything new of note in this trailer to make me think this will be any different.

The exciting thing about this trailer is that it makes you want to know more about what's happening. The shots that are chosen are wisely picked because it prevents any opportunity for there to be any lulls. Your attention doesn't drift because the trailer won't let you drift. There seems to be sharp schisms of mental instability all around and it's exciting. For all the trailers that want to play pretty and prance around what we're all here to see it's just plain great to be sold on a movie without any context. It's an anthem to anarchy of sorts but it fits so well when you understand what it is the movie is really trying to say, what it's putting out there.
It's ballsy to put something out there, at this budgetary level, and let this be their commercial that will get people to see it. There isn't anything commercial about it but it's just too good to pass up when the level of craftsmanship that went into making something look so odd and so enticing. The scrambling of names is a nice touch as well. It conveys the crazed nature of both the protagonist and evokes a certain understanding about the movie in general.
The Artist Trailer
This one is a complete delight.
Written and directed by Michael Hazanavicius this trailer is about cinema that feels good, that seems like an old blanket that can still warm your body. I can hardly believe that the man credited for bringing the two OSS 117 films to our shore made this kind of movie simply based on the level of zaniness of OSS but, here, has made something so unique that this is truly a trailer that needs no further examination other than experiencing it.
Enjoy this one simply for the way it tells a story without ever giving you a word.
Magic Trip Trailer
This is certainly an interesting trailer for a new Alex Gibney film.
I'm endlessly fascinated by the choices the man has made and looking a few paces beyond this movie, directing a Lance Armstrong documentary (wondering if he'll include the accusations made on 60 Minutes a few nights ago) and directing a doc on Wikileaks, the man is one of the premiere examiners of current sociological issues and the impact they have on our collective consciousness.
The trailer here is a unique blend of personal footage and cheeky glibness. What's more is that this serves as a document of sorts that looks at a time in the 60's that was the forerunner of the hippie generation. It's documentaries like this that help to put history in its proper context and there most certainly looks like there's more than enough context happening here. There is the footage that is allowed to speak for itself, the moments we get with author Ken Kesey, it's like watching home movies of people who were much cooler than you.
While the trailer is a little too polished, the film, which is also co-directed by Allison Ellwood (she also directed one of the best reality shows of all time, American High) looks like one of those stories about American society that has long since passed on as people passed through the civil rights movement and everything else that has made the idyllic days of The Merry Band of Pranksters a quaint remnant of a time that will never be.
While I can't say how riveting this documentary will be it is nonetheless Gibney's name which makes me believe this will be more than worth my attention. Outside of him and Ellwood, I'm not sure I'd give this a second thought.
Wu Xia Trailer
Yes!
What a good year it's been so far for Donnie Yen. Actually, it's been a good year for me seeing films with Donnie in them. Yeah, Legend of the Fist wasn't that hot but Donnie has been hitting the market fairly hard with his presence and it's been delightful.
This trailer may only be a minute long but it does establish a little bit of story and a whole lot of what to expect in terms of its wire-fu. There's a visual gimmick of seeing what happens when Donnie lays the smack down on guys who no doubt to deserve it but just seeing the man dish out the physical hurt on guys makes me dig this man even more and fear the day when Hollywood wants to put him alongside Chris Tucker in some dreadful Hollywood vehicle.
The action here is swift and mighty. Director Peter Chan's last, The Warlords, didn't do much for me but this, this looks like something I could really enjoy. I'm hoping for both his and Yen's sake that there's a movie here I can finally settle in and enjoy. [Twitch [1]]

Transformers: Dark of the Moon 3D Trailer [5]- Look, it may be warmed over pap but praise those with the talent to make me think that parting with my money to see this wouldn't be such a bad idea.
Green Lantern 3D Trailer [6] - I mean this in the best way possible: this trailer feels like something I would see before embarking on a spin through Space Mountain.
Conan O'Brien Can't Stop Trailer [7] - I think the best parts of this trailer are when we see Conan being brutally honest with us and himself. Why you would hide that behind the pandering wackiness is a little stupefying.
Homeland Trailer [8] - This looks about as interesting as a cooling bowl of oatmeal: ultimately satisfying but rather bland all by itself.
The Muppets Teaser Trailer [9] - I don't get why they felt the need to keep the farce up for as long as they did. Rather, the real audience for this, kids under ten, just want the felt puppets, not some crafty joke.
Take Shelter Trailer [10] - If this isn't your favorite trailer this week there is something wrong with your chemical makeup. Rock solid all the way around.
Salvation Boulevard Trailer [11] - Just doesn't do anything for me. The message is muddled about what it is they're selling and what's here just falls flat.
A Little Help Trailer [12] - A little too clever for its own good. I'm not inspired to see this as much as I am kind of annoyed by its tone.
The Smurfs Trailer #2 [13] - Just wither up and die already. Someday I predict this will be sold in a combo two pack in a discount bin with Hop right next to the Antonio Sabato Jr. collection.
Shark Night 3D Trailer [14] - This looks horrendous. The people who made this trailer do know that I can't see in 3D, right? It just seems like a waste of resources.
The Descendants Trailer [15] - I really like this trailer. A lot. I am hoping for a sweeping, dramatic explosion but I would be satisfied if it was just plain good.
Happy Feet Two Trailer [16] - I had such a virulently bad reaction to the first film that I can't see anything new of note in this trailer to make me think this will be any different.

Moby Speaks Out Against Animal Cruelty
American musician Moby is starring in a new video for PETA.
“Industrial animal production destroys everything it touches”, he says in the video, filmed in Berlin. "It destroys the animals, it destroys the workers, it destroys the communities, and it destroys the people who consume the animal products. No one benefits from industrial animal production except … the big corporations.
“Unfortunately, the people who produce meat, the people who produce dairy, and the people who produce eggs ? they’re lying to you. So do what you can to educate yourself, know where your food comes from, and make the ethical choice.”

The Trailer For 'Mortal Kombat: Legacy' Debuts With Guns Blazing (VIDEO)

Fans have been eagerly awaiting updates on the possibility of more live-action adventures set in the world of 'Mortal Kombat,' the infamous video game series of the 90s. It all started last summer, when a bloody, hard-hitting short film landed on the Web from filmmaker Kevin Tancharoen, and starring Michael Jai White (of 'Black Dynamite' fame) and Jeri 'Seven of Nine' Ryan. Video game fans were happy to see a film adaptation that actually tried to match the tone and impact of its video game predecessor.
Well to all those who were hoping that the short was the start of the something more, you'll be happy to new that Tancharoen's gritty depiction of 'Mortal Kombat' will continue in a new web series called 'Mortal Kombat: Legacy' -- and we have the first trailer for it behind the jump.

Casting Bits: Jamie Chung in ?Knife Fight;? Joey King in ?Oz: The Great and Powerful;? Katrina Bowden in ?American Reunion?
Jamie Chung has two big Legendary Pictures films behind her this year, Sucker Punch and The Hangover Part II, and now (probably not as a response) she's going indie for the film Knife Fight. That's the one starring Rob Lowe where he plays "a political crisis manager who specializes in playing hardball on behalf of scandal-plagued clients." Jamie Chung will be his savvy assistant. Quite a few other people are in talks for roles, too: Julie Bowen, Connie Britton, Jennifer Morrison, Rebecca Mader and Titus Welliver. Bill Guttentag directs and co-wrote the script with Chris Lehane; the film will shoot next month in San Francisco, and a release is planned for October 2012, timed around the next US Presidential election.
Before Knife Fight makes it to theaters, Jamie Chung will be in Premium Rush, which stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt and was written and directed by David Koepp. [Variety [1]]
After the break, Oz: The Great and Powerful and American Reunion get minor additions.
Variety [2] calls the role of China Girl in Oz: The Great and Powerful 'coveted,' and with good reason: she becomes a sort of surrogate daughter to James Franco's character after her family is killed by the evil witch Evanora. 11-year old Joey King won the gig, which follows up her Ramona and Beezus lead role and will shoot after she films a small part in The Dark Knight Rises.
In addition to James Franco, she'll work opposite Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams and Rachel Weisz in the Oz prequel tale.
Finally, the American Pie sequel that a couple of people evidently want to see, much to the confusion of everyone else, now has its final cast member. Katrina Bowden (30 Rock, Piranha 3DD) has joined American Reunion to play the LA party girl dating Chris Klein's character. She complements Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott, Alyson Hannigan, Thomas Ian Nicholas, Eugene Levy, Tara Reid, Eddie Kaye Thomas, Jennifer Coolidge and Mena Suvari. The film features the American Pie characters heading home for their high school reunion, and that leads to a weekned where they all revisit their friendships. Vin Diesel Could Shoot An R-Rated ?Riddick? Movie This Summer
For years, Vin Diesel and David Twohy have sworn up and down that they were going to make a sequel to the Pitch Black spin-off The Chronicles of Riddick. As far back as this site has existed [1], and beyond, the pair have said they'd like to continue the story of the sci-fi badass and wanted criminal Riddick, but when the 2004 film failed to explode at the box office, grossing barely $60 million domestic, those plans stalled. But the pair have kept thinking about [2] the idea, developing it [3], and now with Diesel a hot commodity once again (based off the huge success of Fast Five) it seems the Riddick sequel is once again a possibility.
Diesel took to his Facebook page and said that he and Twohy could be ready to shoot a hard-R rated version of the film as early as this summer...if he was willing to work for scale, which basically means minimum wage for actors. Will Diesel do it? And what exactly did he say? Read it after the break.
Diesel took to Facebook [4] to bring up the news. Here's what he said:
D T the writer/director just landed in New York with the good news. We can start filming this summer. However, there is a catch... in order for us to make a true R rated film, I must work for scale upfront. Not unlike the "Find me Guilty" experience (which I wouldn't have changed for the world)... Money is always second to art, integrity and spirit... but the real issue is deeper. Can I suspend my life, to momentarily venture to that dark place... called Riddick. Now, I need to hear from Our collective... you. Wisdom and clarity appreciated
Tens of thousands of people did comment and Diesel followed up with this post:
I have read so many interesting and intelligent responses to today's post. You all have such great insight... I truly love Our page. Thank you again for taking the time to weigh in. P.s. I am off to another meeting with David, the director of Riddick... to see concept art and discuss the potential schedule. Rex Cowan: - wrote - "We all have the dark Riddick inside us. You have a penchant for showing us our true selves. I for one support your dive into Riddick and will standby to help pull you out."
So where does that leave us? Waiting for Diesel and Twohy to make a decision and bring it to a studio. If Diesel does decide to work for scale, and Twohy can keep the budget semi-affordable, they'll be beating away studios with a stick, even if it is a sequel to an average movie that was a box office disappointment.
Plus, as odd as it sounds, Diesel has lost a little street cred only making Fast and Furious movies in the past few years. If he does work for scale and makes an R-rated Riddick sequel, no matter how good it is, it'll help him regain a little of that lost respect. It seems like a winning proposition for everyone accept Diesel's accountant.
Based on previous news of this film, all we know is that Diesel will need three different body types and that it'll focus more on the character of Riddick as opposed to the world he's in, which was a problem in Chronicles. Putting two and two together, you can imagine we might see Riddick at various stages of his life.

Nick Cannon's Take Action Leadership Event
On Saturday May 21, 29 Los Angeles Unified Schools will send their biggest and best on-campus celebrities to compete in a head-to-head battle to determine the district’s best singers,dancers, musicians, visual artists and spoken word performers at the Beyond the Bell Take Action Leadership Campaign event.
Competition winners will receive scholarships, awards and prizes awarded by Hollywood celebrities such as Nick Cannon (Teen Nick Chairman, America’s Got Talent), Romeo Miller (Jumping The Broom), Allison Iraheta (Top 4 finalist on American Idol), Teck Holmes (The Real World, Hole In The Wall Host), Jason “2Z” Duncan (Stomp the Yard 1 & 2), by Poreotics (Current Champions of Randy Jackson’s America’s Best Dance Crew) and More. In addition Performances are scheduled by Nick Cannon’s Ncredible artists The School Gyrls (self titled Teen Nick Movie), the Wonder Broz (New hit single “Chitty Chitty”), L.A. dance legends the Rangers & Colette Carr (Interscope/Cherry Tree artist). The day will be further highlighted with a 2,000 student flash mob led by celebrity choreographer Chuck Maldonado (Missy Elliott, Usher).
The event will also be attended by various political leaders including L.A. City Councilmembers Tom LaBonge and Jan Perry.
“I loved to perform when I was a teen so I know how important it is for young people to have opportunities to be inspired and to share their gifts with the world,” says Nick Cannon. “There are so many talented kids out there that are like celebrities in the circles they travel in. The great thing about this event is that it really gives them an opportunity to shine, to inspire others and to have something to look forward to.”
Now in its 4th year, Beyond the Bell’s Take Action Leadership Campaign is a district-wide initiative to utilize after school and in-school activities and programming as a vehicle to reduce violence, increase attendance, improve grades and prepare students for college and the job market.
WHERE: The event will take place on three stages on the New York streets of Paramount Pictures in Hollywood , CA. Entrance is through the Windsor gate on Melrose Ave.

Spotlight: Royal Wedding Charity Fund's Celebrity Supporters
Prince William and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge have created a charitable gift fund to help celebrate their wedding. The fund will focus on assisting charities which support the five causes chosen by the couple. These causes are close to their hearts and reflect the experiences, passions and values of their lives so far. Having been touched by the goodwill shown to them since their engagement, they have asked that anyone wishing to send them a wedding gift consider doing so in the form of a donation to the fund.
