Celebrity Rehab exists, at least in part, to be an intense cautionary tale, but even the most avid watcher could have been surprised by the emotional rawness of this week’s show. In the scene above, Sherrie and Mike Rubin share the story of their son Aaron, who entered a coma and had multiple strokes as a result of prescription-drug abuse. The death certificate was all but signed when Aaron made a miraculous recovery. He’s still with them today, but he’s a paraplegic who cannot speak — he can communicate via his facial expressions and his fingers (one for yes, two for no). As Sherrie frankly puts it, “Aaron dying would probably be the worst thing that could happen to me; Aaron living and being in the state that he is, is the worst thing that could happen to Aaron.” Devastating.
